Betta fish are becoming a very popular freshwater fish. Betta fish are also known as Siamese Fighting Fish. One reason these fish are so popular is because of the male’s striking colors and both sexes’ exquisite fins. An aquarist can tell the difference between a male and female by its color. Males tend to have more intense colors than females. More than one female can be kept in a non-aggressive aquarium. However, the male Betta should be kept in at least 1 gallon or more aquarium by itself. Males are aggressive and may even kill other fish. The Betta should be kept in an aquarium reasonably decorated to provide hiding places as needed. Do not use decorations or gravel with sharp edges. These fish are excellent jumpers, so a lid is appropriate. Betta fish will usually eat what is given from flakes to free-dried-foods and blood worms. Many fish stores offer specialized Betta diet foods.
